The nomination of Qhapac Ñan to the World Heritage List has been successful in the early stages and met all the requirements needed to file candidacy, Luis Perano, Peru´s cultural minister has announced.
The file will now be submitted to ICOMOS (UNESCOS´s advisory body of the Cultural Heritage theme) for assessment, the results of which will be announced in June 2014. If successful, Qhapaq Ñan will be declared a World Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity site.
Qhapaq Ñan was the backbone of the Inca Empire’s political and economic power. The whole network of roads over 23,000 km in length connected various production, administrative and ceremonial centres constructed over more than 2,000 years of pre-Inca Andean culture.
