In Peru, "luxury tourism" has been steadily increasing in recent years. It currently accounts for 5% of the tourism income in the country. This, according to Carlos Canales, the head of Peru's National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur).
According to Canales, luxury tourism accounted for 3% of total tourists in 2010, but in the last three years it has increased in part due to hotel investment and luxury services that have been growing steadily in the main tourist destinations around Peru.
"A tourist can spend over US$ 1,000 a day in restaurants, hotels and exclusive services in the country, "he said.
He also mentioned that luxury tourism should continue to climb to 8% by 2016, due to the increase of foreigners looking for exclusive services.
