In 2007, Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the Winners that would comprise the list of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Shortly thereafter, the government of Peru declared the 7th of July as the official Day of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu New Wonder of the World".
Machu Picchu won this title, "Wonder of the World" as part of a contest put on by the New Open World Corporation (NOWC), created by Swiss Bernard Weber.
Following the outcome of the NWOC, Alan Garcia made the declaration of the day. The purpose of decreeing July 7th as the "Day of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu” is to remember how important the Inca Citidal is for the world and to acknowledge the participation Peruvians in promoting tourism.
