As every year, the famous Inca Trail to the lost city of the Incas - Machu Picchu - will be closed for maintenance during the month of February. As the trail is an original Inca Road recognized by the UNESCO, it is officially protected by the Peruvian government and it has to comply with certain regulations.
The INC – Instituto Nacional de Cultura - is the governmental body that manages all historical sites in Peru and therefore the INC is responsible for the yearly maintenance. February is an ideal month to do so as there are normally fewer tourist in the Cusco area due to the rainy season.
The route will re-open March1st. During the maintenance the route will be cleaned and certain restorations and reparations will be given to the old Inca Path. Also the ground would be treated for damage, and maintenance will be given to camping grounds and bathrooms, cleaning water drains, and trimming plants.
If you are in Cusco during the month of February, you need to look for alternatives for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Fortunately there are many different options: you can take a train tour to Machu Picchu or, choose a different hike to the old inca ruins: the Salkantay Trek and the Lares Trek are the most popular ones.
