June is the month for festivals, celebrations and fiesta in Cusco. However it is also the time to draw attention to local issues like for example children on the streets. That’s why on Friday MIMP – Ministerio de la Mujer y Poblaciones Vulnerables started the declaracion por la resititucion de los derechos del niño. The Plaza de Armas was place for some colourful activities, music and dancing. Supporters of the campaign dressed up in fancy costumes entertaining the children. The festivities were themed “la calle no es su lugar” (engl. the street is not their place) and is part of the national programme YACHAY. The programme offers activities, sports and educative training throughout the whole month. Also streetsworkers are sent to the inner city e.g. markets, plazas and the streets in order to intervene with the children, their families and the local community. YACHAY aims to restore children’s rights and is one of the main institutions to advert the importance of social work in Peru.
