False tour guides reported in Cusco

The association of Official Tourist Guides Cusco (AGOTUR) reported 8 false tour guides. These guides do not have any certification or graduation of colleges or universities. One of the agencies has been closed down, the other 7 are still under the investigation of the public ministry.

Daniel Abarca Soto, President of AGOTUR, says there are many unofficial offices. Most of them combine different functions at the same time. For instance souvenir shops selling tours as well. Functions are not clearly separated and there is a lack of clear policies. He adds that the administrators of justice do not enforce the laws. According to the Law on the protection of tourist guides (Regulation No. 28529), a guide should be someone that graduated from a college or university, but, says Abarca Soto “ there are gaps in the law”.
