Machu Picchu: 7 years of World Wonder

On July the 7th it’s seven years ago that Machu Picchu has become a new world wonder. The municipality of Cusco wants to celebrate this with a no working Holiday for the general public, private institutions and for commercial services.

Machu Picchu was named New World Wonder in Lissabon, in 2007 and according to the New 7 Wonder’s Website, over hundred million votes led to the election of Machu Picchu.

The old Inca Citadel Machu Picchu was built back in the 15th century by the Incan Emperor pachacutec. The location is unique, halfway up the Andean Plateau, above the Urubamba River in the cloudforest of Peru. The city remained ‘non discovered’, or ‘lost’ for several centuries untill it was re-discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911.
