TripAdvisor – the world's largest travel site - has announced yesterday that Peru’s Machu Picchu tops its list of landmark destinations in the world for the second year in a row!
Machu Picchu - an Unesco World Heritage site and one of the new Seven Wonders of the World - ranks first on a list of Top 25 Landmarks, followed by Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E, Taj Mahal in Agra, India, Great Cathedral and Mosque in Cordoba, Spain and St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Italy. "TripAdvisor travelers have helped identify some of the best attractions around the globe," said Barbara Messing, chief marketing at TripAdvisor. "These award-winning landmarks are an ideal starting point for taking in the world's must-see sights." Winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for landmark and park attractions worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period. Situated 110 km northwest of Cusco in the southern part of Peru, Machu Picchu was named top landmark destination in the world according to a similar ranking published in June 2013 as well and it’s one of the top attractions of Peru next to other sites such as the Nazca Lines, Lake Titicaca (Puno), the Colca Canyon in Arequipa, the ruins of Chan Chan, the old Inca Capital Cusco and many others. Machu Picchu can be reached by train (traintours to Machu Picchu) or walking, for instance through the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek. Both treks end with a one day visit to the ruins of Machu Picchu.
